L’boro Local History

{ The Town of Loughborough lies within the Borough of Charnwood, which is part of the County of Leicestershire, which is situated in the Nation of England, which is the major constituent of the United Kingdom, itself dominating the British Isles - a large group of islands lying off the north-west of the Continent of Europe ……… }

Charnwood Forest was originally regarded as part of the Forest of Arden; Charnwood being described in 1622 as “that vast and decayed forest lying on the n-w side of the County of Leicester, neere unto Loughborough, in forme somewhat square, of an hard and barren soyle, full of hills, woods, rocks, and stone torres, and dells of a kind of slate”. It is believed that the name ‘Charnwood’ is derived from ‘Gwern Wudu’ - from the Celtic 'wudu', meaning ‘wood’ and Old British ‘gwern’ meaning Alder, of which many once grew here.
